Tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi, I’m Darrin, from Sydney. I’ve been a Tour manager for 25 years, escorting groups of International and Australian travellers around Australia, New Zealand and the world. Growing up in the western suburbs of Sydney in the 70’s, I’d always dreamed of travelling to other places around the world. I had a great scrapbook of world sights cut out of old tour brochures I found outside travel agents, but I never thought I’d actually get to see them. However, in my 20’s I left for overseas and travelled for the next 10 years through over 100 countries, experiencing more than I ever thought I would. On my return, I started leading group tours and have loved it ever since.
What attracted you to the love of train travel?
There’s something about a train isn’t there? I think anyone reading this page would get that. I remember wonderful overnight trains in Europe. Learning Spanish with a mate and group of black clad matrons in a 6-berth couchette to Madrid. Slipping out of a rainy Paris in the dining car sipping wine and watching the suburbs go by. I’ve travelled on the Palace on Wheels, the old Maharaja’s train through Rajasthan; the Pride of Africa, an old steam train in South Africa; the Orient Express, the Ghan, and trains in countries like Egypt, Vietnam, Iran and China.
Favourite country in the world, and why?
I can’t have a favourite. I’ve liked almost everywhere I’ve gone, just for what they are. I’ve found the USA one of the most beautiful, with its’ majestic national parks. Paris, Prague and Barcelona are amazing, Peru, Vietnam, Montenegro. I think this high-speed rail trip in China should be incredible. Travelling the world’s largest high-speed rail network visiting some amazing sights of the world’s oldest civilisation. And high-speed rail is just fun!
Where haven’t you visited but is on the bucket list?
I haven’t seen a lot of West Africa, would love to visit Ethiopia and Madagascar, Svalbard and the Arctic, Alaska. So many places still to see.
How long have you worked with Railway Adventures?
I’m fairly new. Some of you may recognise me from the Central West NSW tour last year!
Your favourite Railway Adventures tour?
The one I’m on! Would have to be China by High-Speed Rail!
What is your favourite international Cuisine?
I do love Italian, a great Scallopine ala Romana lol. I love the crispy duck, plum sauce and pancakes in a Peking Duck as well.
What are your top 5 packing essentials?
- I try to be careful with shoes. You normally walk a lot more when travelling, so I make sure my shoes are very comfortable. I wear insoles, the memory insoles are great to relieve tired feet. Shoes are heavy and bulky, so I limit myself to 2, with maybe sandals if the weather is warm. I also take a small foot massage ball which is great.
- If taking medications, obviously enough to cover yourself and some spare. I usually take a bronchial and a gastro course of broad spectrum antibiotics. Band-Aids in my carry on.
- For an international trip, I always take an eye mask, ear plugs, and jumper for the plane, along with a toothbrush, tissues and wipes. Everything charged, and make sure you have all the correct adaptors for the country you’re going to. I also have an e-reader, much lighter than a book. Good earplugs to block out noise and be able to listen to relaxing music or a podcast during the endless waiting.
- Keep an eye on luggage weight. The old adage of taking half of what you’ve packed and double the money still stands. Pack for the expected weather you’ll be having, if cold, a puffer jacket is much smaller and lighter than a heavy woollen one. I bring washing powder to do smalls and t-shirts in the sink every few days. You want room for purchases as well.
- Vegemite! I usually bring a jar to have with my toast and eggs in the morning. Start the day right lol.
Tell us why you love your job.
I’m very lucky to have the job I do. After 25 years I still love moving, looking at the view from a train as it passes the countryside, the hotels, the experiences, the novelty, it’s exhilarating. The guests I travel with are there to experience new things, and I love showing them. I remember a village tour in Fiji a few years ago. I had four American ladies who had been grabbed by the friendly Fijian ladies and danced around the hall to the sounds of the Lali drums and the villager’s song. The look on the faces of those ladies was just pure joy. I’m lucky to have a job where I can spread joy, new experiences and learning opportunities to others.
It’s also special when you’re able to help fulfil the dreams of your guests. For some, it may be to visit a particular site, or an experience or a person. It’s great to be able to help where you can. For most Tour Leaders, we’re away from home a lot, for long periods. It’s hard sometimes, but for most of us it’s a calling, and I’m always thankful.
