Fitness Requirements

What level of fitness and mobility do I need to participate in a Rail Tour?

Different tours have varying activities and as such require different levels of fitness and mobility. To help guide you, we have graded our tours with how many ‘LOCOS’ will be needed to keep pace.

Health and Participation Criteria

To participate in a Railway Adventures tour, you must be reasonably fit, in good health and able to participate in all activities without assistance from Tour Leaders or other tour members. If you require assistance, a fit and able travel companion must undertake to accompany and assist you with all tasks for the duration of the whole tour. The responsibility of the Tour Leader is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. You will need the ability to; negotiate airports and railway stations without wheelchair assistance; use combined shower/bath facilities; undertake walking tour of 1-2 hours duration, including using stairs, walking over cobblestones and other uneven surfaces; stand for long periods in museums and other sites; embark/disembark coaches, trains and other methods of transportation without assistance; handle your own luggage.

As many of Railway Adventures’ international and Australian sites do not provide access to wheelchairs or similar mobility aids, we regret that Railway Adventures tours are not suitable for people who require the use of a walking frame, wheeled walker, wheelchair, or motorised scooter.

Locos Fitness Grading

To get the most from your travels and keep up with the group, a reasonable level of fitness is required. Each destination and tour makes specific requirements, so you should check carefully with us if you are in doubt about your ability to fully participate. To help guide you, we have graded our tours with how many locos will be needed to keep pace.

ONE LOCO
Reasonable Mobility and Fitness

Our tours are rated on a mobility and fitness scale from one to three ‘locos’. On One Loco tours, you’ll be able to walk up to 500 metres without needing to rest, be able to get on and off coaches, trains and boats with minimal assistance and handle your own luggage if required. People who require a walking stick are usually well accommodated on these tours.

TWO LOCOS
Good Mobility and Fitness

Our tours are rated on a mobility and fitness scale from one to three ‘locos’. On an average day on Two Loco tours, you may be walking up to 7,000 steps on any day. You’ll need to have good balance to walk safely on uneven ground, be able to manage medium-grade inclines walking into towns or historic sites, be able to get on and off coaches, trains and boats unassisted, and oftentimes handle your own luggage. These tours are not recommended for people who rely on walking aids or have poor aerobic fitness.

THREE LOCOS
Excellent Mobility and Fitness

Our tours are rated on a mobility and fitness scale from one to three ‘locos’. Three Loco tours are faster paced and the itineraries often involve some long days. You’ll need to be able to walk up to 15,000 steps on some days (often on uneven ground), manage flights of stairs without assistance, get on and off coaches, trains and boats unassisted (sometimes at pace), and often handle your own luggage. While you don’t have to be a gym junkie to keep up with your fellow travellers, you’ll need to be free of any walking aids, be able to walk at a steady pace, have good aerobic fitness and good muscle strength.
