Tour Leader

Karl Chapman

Karl hails from the north-western home counties of England, an area known to London Underground history buffs as Metro-land for its connection with the Metropolitan Railway in the early 20th century.  With a passion for all modes of transport, from trolley buses to hovercraft to hot air balloons, he has travelled extensively around the British Isles, Scandinavia, continental Europe and the USA including Hawaii. Since moving to Melbourne in 2004, his adventures have taken him to all the states and territories of Australia, with a particular focus on his adopted home region of Victoria. In his spare time, Karl volunteers as a tour lead on vintage sleeper train excursions operated by heritage group 707 Operations. He also works in radio, producing and presenting shows on Melbourne’s 3RRR FM, while his other interests include film, theatre, music, history and, naturally, all forms of air, land and sea transport heritage! When it comes to travel and life in general, Karl is a true believer in the adage “it’s the journey, not the destination”, thanks in no small part to his high school English teacher who introduced him to Paul Theroux’s (at the time still quite recent!) 1978 travelogue “The Old Patagonian Express”. It remains his dream to one day visit the book’s namesake La Trochita.
