Often described as one of Australia’s “prettiest towns” and renowned for its picturesque rural setting nestled between the mountains and the sea, historic architecture, and vibrant food and wine scene, Berry offers a charming first stop on this South Coast journey. Established in the early 19th century and named after the influential Berry family, the town has preserved much of its historic character, with tree-lined streets and heritage-listed buildings – the town’s main street alone features over 50 heritage-listed buildings from the Victorian and Federation eras, including the 1866 courthouse and the 1885 Hotel Berry, one of the oldest pubs in NSW.
On arrival, we’ll enjoy an easy guided orientation walk followed by time at leisure to have some lunch and explore Berry’s tree-lined streets, heritage buildings and boutiques. You might choose to follow the Berry Heritage Walk, which can take just 30 minutes or up to 2 hours for the full circuit if you want to do the whole thing – you’ll have time.
We’ll regroup in the mid afternoon for the short walk to our comfortable, centrally located boutique accommodation to be reunited with our luggage and check in. You might like to just relax at the hotel or go back and explore more of this charming town on your own. Early evening, we’ll travel by private coach to Bangalay Dining, the award-winning restaurant nestled beside Seven Mile Beach, for a welcome dinner including drinks, showcasing fresh regional produce and native ingredients in a refined coastal setting.
Overnight: Mandala Signature, Berry (D)
Today is a very special one – a visit to Bundanon Estate and Art Museum, gifted to the nation by celebrated Australian landscape painter Arthur Boyd and his wife Yvonne in 1993. Arthur Boyd was unarguably one of Australia’s most significant 20th-century artists, known for his deeply expressive paintings, prints, and ceramics exploring themes of love, loss, and the Australian landscape. In the later part of his life, Boyd was drawn to the Shoalhaven region, where the dramatic terrain became central to his art. In gifting Bundanon to the Australian people in the last years of his life, he envisioned it as a place for creativity, learning and connection to landscape – an enduring legacy that continues to inspire artists and visitors alike.
This morning after breakfast, we’ll board our coach and transfer to the original Bundanon homestead for a private guided tour of Boyd’s studio and family residence. Set on a bend of the Shoalhaven River, the site offers insight into the artist’s life and working environment, as well as the broader legacy of the Boyd family in Australian art.
We’ll continue to the new Bundanon Art Museum precinct and enjoy a catered lunch at the light-filled Ramox Café, with sweeping views over the surrounding bushland, before setting you loose to explore the Art Museum at your own pace. Designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects, the striking contemporary building is partly buried into the hillside to minimise visual impact on the landscape, and offers 2,500 square metres of exhibition space holding one of Australia’s most important single-artist collections – over 4,000 works including more than 1,300 by Arthur Boyd himself, plus works by Sidney Nolan, John Perceval, Joy Hester, Charles Blackman, Brett Whiteley, Margaret Preston.
Later in the afternoon, we’ll return to Berry where dinner and the evening is at leisure.
Overnight: Mandala Signature, Berry (B,L)
This morning after breakfast and check out, we’ll settle into our coach and travel east through the lush Shoalhaven hinterland to the shores of stunning Jervis Bay, famous for having some of the whitest sand and clearest turquoise water in the world.
Upon arrival, we’ll embark from Huskisson Wharf on a morning cruise through the pristine waters of the bay, renowned for its marine life – keep watch for bottlenose dolphins that live in the bay year-round, seabirds and, if we’re lucky, migrating humpback whales.
After the cruise, we’ll wander into the Huskisson Hotel for a relaxed lunch overlooking the water, before delving into the maritime history of the region with a guided visit to the community-run Jervis Bay Maritime Museum, which focuses on the maritime, Indigenous, and colonial history of the Jervis Bay region. A stand-out exhibit is the historic Lady Denman Ferry, a 1912 Sydney Harbour ferry built in Huskisson that was returned to its ‘birthplace’ in 1980s.
From here, we’ll continue to Paperbark Camp, an African-inspired luxury eco-retreat nestled among spotted gums and eucalypts. Tonight’s dinner will be at the camp’s iconic Gunyah restaurant, a magical candlelit treetop dining room offering fine food, and boutique regional wines in a relaxed yet refined atmosphere, showcasing true bush dining sophistication.
Overnight: Paperbark Camp, Wollamia (B,L,D)
After breakfast and a lazy morning enjoying the bushland surrounding Paperbark Camp, we’ll depart for the coastal town of Gerringong. Nestled between verdant dairy country and the sea, it’s one of the prettiest and most popular seaside towns on the NSW South Coast, loved for its relaxed village vibe, stunning beaches, rolling green hills, and great food scene.
We’ll stop here for a chance to explore the boutique shops and cafés of the town centre, take a short stroll along the headland, and enjoy lunch at leisure before climbing into the foothills of the Illawarra Range by coach for a visit to the wonderful Illawarra Fly. This 1.6km elevated treetop walk meanders through towering eucalyptus and rainforest canopies, offering dramatic views across the valleys and out to the Pacific Ocean. At the top of Knights Tower, breathe in the fresh mountain air and take in the remarkable landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity and coastal erosion.
Back on our private coach we’ll descend from the highlands and follow the Grand Pacific Drive, a scenic route that hugs the coastline, weaving between dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches and sweeping ocean views, all the way to Wollongong. We’ll go directly to our hotel, located directly opposite North Wollongong Beach, and check in.
Dinner this evening is at a popular nearby local restaurant.
Overnight: Novotel Wollongong North Beach, Wollongong (B,D)
This morning after breakfast and check out, we’ll board our private coach for a visit to the Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of the region’s most impressive landmarks. Established by the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist order, the temple blends traditional Chinese monastic architecture with serene landscaped gardens, lotus ponds, and commanding views of Mount Keira, and promotes cultural exchange, spiritual education and personal wellbeing – standing proudly as a place of peace and inclusivity for people of all faiths. We’ll explore the main shrine, pagoda and art-filled exhibition spaces on a guided tour.
From here, we’ll immerse ourselves in a chapter of transport history at the HARS Aviation Museum in Albion Park, home to an extraordinary collection of vintage aircraft including a decommissioned Boeing 747. Adventurous guests may even have the chance to experience a guided wing walk on the jumbo jet.
We’ll return to Wollongong for a celebratory farewell lunch at the esteemed K.Malu Kitchen and Bar, sending our luggage on to Sydney with our coach. After lunch, it’s just a short walk to Wollongong Station to board an afternoon train for the relaxed return journey to Sydney’s Central Station, where your luggage will be waiting.

Train traveller, well known TV personality and travel company owner, Scott McGregor, has travelled on some of the world’s most inspiring railway tours and led the most exclusive group adventures to numerous exotic destinations over the years.
“Rustic, character-filled, zig-zagging railways of Burma, opulent hotels on wheels in India South Africa and Sri Lanka, steam-hauled heritage trains in some of the most staggeringly scenic parts of the world, dinky little rail-cars in outback Queensland, bullet trains in Japan, cliff-hugging lines in Switzerland and Norway—if it travels on a rail track, I’m there!”, exclaims self-confessed train travel tragic, Scott McGregor. “In my mind, travelling by rail is still the most wonderful way to immerse yourself in the country you’re visiting. It’s romantic, relaxing and about as much fun as you can have!”.
Aa a child of the last days of steam trains in the busy junction town of Orange, NSW; trains heading in all directions offering temptations and dreams of faraway places, left an indelible impression on a young, inquisitive boy and Scott has been riding the rails in one form or another ever since. While Scott’s acting career of 30 years kept him busy starring in numerous TV shows and stage plays and then as an on-air presenter on programs such as Better Homes and Gardens, Room for Improvement and various pay-TV programs, his passion for railway tours was ever-present. “Presenting a series of Railway Adventure travel programs for Channel 7 was a career highlight”, he says with as much enthusiasm now as he had then.
In 2012 Scott decided to combine three of his passions; travel, trains and presenting, and launched Railway Adventures. Not only does he get to expand his own horizons and indulge his love of train travel, he gets to use his extensive hosting experience and love of people to lead other like-minded travellers on escorted train tours around the world. Since then, Railway Adventures has mounted more than 50 tours from Sweden to Sri Lanka, Tasmania to Transylvania, Britain to Burma and Venice to Vietnam, thrilling over 1,000 travellers. New tours are launched regularly, inspired by new trains, new routes and the growing interest in taking a train to some of the world’s most fascinating places. But you don’t have to be a train ‘nut’ to enjoy a Railway Adventures tour – there’s something for everyone!
Just one example of how Scott finds inspiration for a tour can be found in Outback Queensland. “There you find some of Australia’s most eccentric and appealing trains and together with a mail-plane flight over the Gulf and some interesting local coach and boat trips you have the essence of a quintessential Aussie outback adventure. The sleeper train, The Spirit of the Outback, the Savannahlander and the Gulflander (which has been running on the same timetable for more than 125 years!) are all iconic trains that traverse various parts of the wild Outback, Savannah and tropical rainforest landscapes of the vast state of Queensland. Along with some other special treats not available to the ordinary traveller, Railway Adventures passengers get to do it all!.
One of his favourite journey’s is by private train in Sri Lanka. For 2 weeks every year Scott charters the Viceroy Special heritage train to tour the island on a gentle rail cruise with a lucky group of travellers. Staying in luxury resorts and hotels along the way, his special train travels to almost every corner of the scenic island. “Having a private train at your disposal for an adventure around this magic island is a rare treat and a great way to immerse yourself in the scenery and culture of the country.”, he enthuses. “Our Vietnam tour makes use of private carriages attached to regular trains to explore that great country in comfort and in South Africa we use a variety of trains including the luxurious Rovos Rail and the Royal Livingstone steam train to move from one incredible adventure to another”.
Apart from the obvious joy of seeing a country by train, travelling in a small group of like-minded travellers with a dedicated, experienced tour leader and knowledgeable, English-speaking local guides is what really sets Railway Adventures apart. “The camaraderie that comes from both shared purpose and shared experiences on tour is an important aspect of the journey” Scott adds. “We’ve seen many people become life-long friends from the time they shared together along the line. The best feeling in the world is when I welcome these same people on repeat journeys”.
Along with popular destinations like Switzerland, Scandinavia, Outback Queensland and Sri Lanka, a new breed of more unusual destinations has gained great interest. Java, Cuba, Southern Africa, India and the New England region of NSW are just some of the newer adventures on offer. As for Scott’s next escape, it’s most likely some quality time at Ruwenzori Retreat, his own personal train on the Great Dividing Range near Mudgee, Central NSW. Built from a collection of vintage railway carriages it’s now a boutique tourist accommodation, comprising exclusive Orient Express style comfort for up to 13 guests. “When the travels are done, coming back to my own train in the beautiful Mudgee mountains is the most restorative and magical time for this committed rail romantic”, Scott says.
