Overnight: Grand Hotel Union Eurostars, Ljubljana (D)
This morning after breakfast we’ll embark on a guided walking tour through Ljubljana, a city where baroque elegance, secessionist style and modern creativity coexist in perfect harmony. Much of the city’s distinct character is owed to architect Jože Plečnik, whose visionary urban plan in the 1920s transformed Ljubljana into a symbol of national pride. His bridges, markets and riverside colonnades were conceived as part of a “modern Athens” for a city that would embody Slovenia’s cultural revival at the crossroads of Central Europe.
Our walking tour will end at Ljubljana Castle, a hilltop fortress that has guarded the city for nearly a thousand years. Originally a medieval stronghold and later a Habsburg garrison, the castle today stands as a cultural beacon overlooking a capital that has continually reinvented itself. We’ll enjoy lunch here, housed within its historic walls, and take in panoramic views over the city’s red rooftops.
After some time at leisure, we’ll travel by private coach to the Postojna Cave, one of Europe’s most remarkable natural wonders and one of the world’s most captivating karst caves, and the only one with an underground train. Here, we’ll enjoy a guided tour and enjoy a thrilling 3.7 km ride on the electric Postojna cave train for a subterranean journey through vast limestone chambers, glittering formations, dramatic tunnels and grand halls.
Upon our return to the hotel, your evening is at leisure.
Overnight: Grand Hotel Union Eurostars, Ljubljana (B, L)
After breakfast and check-out, we’ll transfer by coach to Sežana Station near the Italian border, where the limestone karst landscape gives way to gentle vineyards and small farming villages. Here, we’ll board the train on the historic Bohinj Railway, a masterpiece of early 20th-century engineering built under the Habsburg Empire to link Vienna with Trieste.
The line threads through tunnels, across viaducts and over deep valleys as it winds toward the Julian Alps, passing small rural towns and glimpses of the turquoise waters of the Soča River, before emerging into alpine scenery dotted with farmsteads and distant church spires. One of highlights of this journey is the Solkan Bridge, the largest stone arch railway bridge in the world, spanning the Soča River in a single graceful curve. After riding the rails through the forests and mountain passes of western Slovenia you’ll arrive at stunning Lake Bled, whose tranquil waters and forested slopes have inspired visitors since the days of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy.
After a picnic lunch beside the lake, we’ll glide across the water in a Pletna gondola to the island’s Church of the Assumption of Mary, one of Slovenia’s most iconic and picturesque landmarks. The site’s religious significance dates back to the 11th century BCE with evidence of Slavic pagan worship being found on the site. The first brick-built church, a Romanesque basilica, was consecrated in 1142, rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century, and renovated in the current baroque style with rich interior decorations, largely preserved since the 17th century. Legend says that if you ring the famous wishing bell (cast in 1534), three times and make a secret wish, it will come true.
Later, check in to your lakeside accommodation and enjoy some time at leisure before joining the group for dinner.
Overnight: Rikli Balance Hotel, Lake Bled (B,L,D)
After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll travel by coach to the Zelenci Nature Reserve, a tranquil wetland at the source of the Sava Dolinka River, where emerald springs bubble up from the sand and the peaks of the Julian Alps rise in the distance. The reserve is home to abundant birdlife and offers an intimate glimpse of Slovenia’s pristine alpine environment.
Afterwards, we’ll take part in a hands-on cooking class at one of Slovenia’s esteemed kitchens, learning the secrets of traditional Slovenian dishes before enjoying what we’ve cooked for lunch. We’ll return to our hotel in the mid afternoon where the rest of the day and evening is at leisure.
Overnight: Rikli Balance Hotel, Lake Bled (B, L)
This morning after a lazy breakfast, you’ll have time for one last stroll around Lake Bled before checking out and enjoying some lunch at leisure. In the early afternoon, we’ll transfer back to Ljubljana and the railway station to board the train to Zagreb, leaving our luggage with the coach for separate transport.
Our rail journey this afternoon traces a scenic route through wooded valleys and rural villages before opening onto the broad plains of northern Croatia, where the city of Zagreb emerges at the foot of Mount Medvednica. Founded from two medieval hilltop settlements, Zagreb grew under Habsburg influence into a graceful Central European capital, with its cobbled Upper Town and leafy boulevards reflecting centuries of cultural exchange between East and West.
Upon arrival, we’ll walk the short distance to the hotel and check in at the Amadria Park Hotel Capital Zagreb, a handsome heritage property in the heart of the city. Housed in a beautifully restored early-20th-century building, the hotel blends original architectural details with a polished, contemporary finish, offering a comfortable base for our time here. Dinner is served this evening at the hotel.
Overnight: Amadria Park Hotel Capital, Zagreb (B, D)
This morning after breakfast, we’ll set out to explore Zagreb’s distinctly Croatian spirit, beginning with a guided walk through the Upper Town (Gradec), where steep cobbled streets lead past faded baroque mansions and leafy courtyards. Here, the story of Zagreb unfolds in layers – the Gothic spires of the cathedral, the proud façade of the Croatian Parliament, and the vivid roof tiles of St Mark’s Church, whose design reflects the unification of the medieval towns that gave birth to the modern capital.
After lunch, continue into the Lower Town, where the rhythm of modern life hums through grand 19th-century boulevards, shaded squares and elegant cafés reminiscent of Vienna and Budapest. Visit the quirky and heartfelt Museum of Broken Relationships before riding the city’s tiny funicular from Lotrščak Tower to the bustling streets below.
Return to the hotel in the late afternoon, with time to relax before enjoying an evening at leisure in the Croatian capital.
Overnight: Amadria Park Hotel Capital, Zagreb (B, L)
After breakfast and check-out, we’ll enjoy a guided visit of the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, where interactive exhibits and historic inventions pay tribute to one of the world’s great innovators, exploring his Croatian origins, and his groundbreaking work in electricity and communication.
From here, we’ll transfer to a local restaurant near the station for a light lunch, leaving our luggage to continue separately on the coach, before walking to Zagreb’s Glavni Kolodvor Station to board an intercity train to Vhrovine. Settle in and relax as the line leaves Zagreb’s urban sprawl behind, tracing a scenic route through the heart of Croatia – climbing through the wooded hills around Karlovac and into the Lika region, passing small rural stations, meadows, and mountain vistas before descending toward the crystalline waters and dense forests of the Plitvice Lakes area, our destination today.
Our coach will meet us in Vhrovine for the journey to the Plitvice Lakes region, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its stunning natural beauty – featuring a series of 16 terraced lakes interconnected by cascading waterfalls and famous for their vibrant turquoise, green, and blue hues, which shift with sunlight and mineral content, creating a mesmerising effect.
Upon arrival, we’ll check in to our accommodation, nestled in the serene countryside near the park entrance, and enjoy a hearty dinner at the hotel. The cool mountain air and tranquil setting mark a striking contrast to the Adriatic coast, offering a peaceful retreat in one of Croatia’s most beloved natural wonders.
Overnight: Plitvice Lakes Etno Garden, Plitvice Lakes (B, L, D)
This morning after breakfast, we’ll spend a few hours immersed in the extraordinary natural beauty of Plitvice Lakes National Park, beginning with a guided tour through the park’s winding wooden paths, crossing over vivid turquoise lakes and past thundering waterfalls surrounded by ancient forest. A peaceful boat ride across one of the larger lakes reveals another perspective of this UNESCO-listed wonder, home to diverse flora and fauna.
We’ll finish our morning exploration with lunch at a local restaurant nestled within the park before returning to our accommodation for a leisurely afternoon relaxing in the stunning alpine surroundings.
Those seeking quiet paths may follow the Upper Lakes circuits for still coves and birdlife. For a grand panorama, the lookout above Veliki Slap frames the park’s highest waterfall. Photographers often favour the Lower Lakes boardwalks for reflections, while a short stroll to Šupljara Cave gives a cool pause and a glimpse of the karst beneath. The park shuttle provides easy links to all of these for unhurried exploring.
Tonight, we’ll gather for a private folklore performance offering a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the Lika region, followed by dinner.
Overnight: Plitvice Lakes Etno Garden, Plitvice Lakes (B, L, D)
This morning after an early breakfast and check out, we’ll transfer back to Vhrovine Station, (once again leaving our big luggage with the coach) and board the intercity train south through Croatia’s rugged interior to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Split, arriving around lunchtime. The Zagreb–Split railway is considered one of Croatia’s most picturesque rail routes, travelling through rolling hills, karst landscapes, and small villages before descending through tunnels, viaducts, and canyons in the Dinaric mountains, into drier landscapes, olive groves, and the first hints of the sea.
Croatia’s second-largest city is a vibrant coastal destination known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and lively Mediterranean atmosphere. After the fall of Rome, Split became part of the Byzantine Empire, then Venice, leaving a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture in the old town. The city’s main promenade, the Riva, is a palm-lined waterfront walkway buzzing with cafés, people-watching, and views of the harbour, ferries, and distant islands – the perfect spot for an evening stroll, coffee, or gelato while soaking in the sea breeze.
After checking in to our hotel, you’ll have a few hours to explore your surroundings and have lunch at leisure before regrouping in the early evening for a very special guided walking tour of the nearby UNESCO World Heritage-listed Diocletian’s Palace.
In the heart of Split Old Town, this massive Roman complex built between 295–305 AD for Emperor Diocletian, is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the world. The site isn’t just ruins – it’s a living, breathing part of the city, with over 200 buildings (many still homes to around 3,000 residents) integrated into narrow alleys, courtyards, shops, bars, and restaurants. The palace complex forms much of Split’s Old Town, where history layers upon itself – Roman columns mix with medieval additions, Renaissance touches, and modern life. Explore the grand courtyard with ancient columns, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, the Vestibule and marvel at the Golden Gates.
We’ll conclude the day with dinner at a traditional konoba, for fresh seafood and Dalmatian specialities.
Overnight: Santa Lucia Heritage Hotel or Similiar, Split (B, D)
Today is yours to soak up the charms of Split at your own pace.
Stroll through the city’s lively green market or fish market, where locals shop for fresh produce and seafood; wander along the bustling waterfront Riva Promenade; visit the Archaeological Museum, Croatia’s oldest museum, showcasing Roman and Illyrian artifacts; or drop into the Meštrović Gallery, displaying works by Ivan Meštrović, Croatia’s renowned sculptor. Or you might like to lie on one of the great little beaches just minutes from the old town.
Alternatively, embark on a half or full day cruise to the nearby islands or take a boat tour along the Dalmatian coast for stunning views of Split’s waterfront skyline. Your tour leader and the hotel can facilitate this.
Overnight: Santa Lucia Heritage Hotel or Similiar, Split (B)
This morning after breakfast and check-out, we’ll hand our luggage over to be transported separately, make our way to the Split ferry terminal and board the fast ferry that will take us south along the Dalmatian coast to Dubrovnik, gliding past limestone headlands, sheltered coves, and the scatter of islands that have long shaped life and travel on the Adriatic. For centuries, these coastal sea lanes were the region’s essential highway linking ports such as Split and Dubrovnik, and carrying merchants, pilgrims, and envoys between the Dalmatian city-states and the wider Mediterranean world.
Upon our arrival around midday, we’ll transfer directly to our seafront hotel, our home for the next four nights, and check in. Adjacent to the exquisite Lapad Bay beachfront, and located just 3 km from Dubrovnik’s magnificent medieval Old Town city centre, you’ll feel like you’re in another world – one of quiet beauty, coastal walks, stunning beaches and spectacular sunsets, all at your doorstep.
The afternoon is then yours to have lunch at leisure and begin exploring your surroundings or simply relaxing and enjoying the view from the hotel ahead of our full day in the Old Town tomorrow.
We’ll regroup in the early evening and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Overnight: Hotel Kompas, Dubrovnik (B, D)
This morning after breakfast, we’ll embark on a memorable journey by boat across the waters of Dubrovnik’s harbour to Dubrovnik Old Town – your experience of this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site starts as the city’s famed ramparts come into view from the sea, just as travellers would have first glimpsed them centuries ago.
On arrival at the Old Town we’ll delve into the layered history of Dubrovnik with a guided walking tour led by a local historian. The pedestrian-only old town, enclosed by 2 km of iconic stone walls, is renowned for its medieval architecture, fortified walls, and stunning Adriatic setting. This entire area is a living museum of the Republic of Ragusa’s (1358–1808) maritime and cultural legacy – Dubrovnik was a powerful maritime republic, rivalling Venice, known for its diplomacy, trade, and motto “Libertas” (freedom). Influences from Venetian, Ottoman, and Dalmatian cultures are evident in the architecture, art, and cuisine. The Old Town survived the 1667 earthquake and the siege of the 1991–1992 Yugoslav Wars, and a continuous program of restoration ensures the preservation of its authenticity for future generations. Dubrovnik is a mecca for fans of the TV series, Game of Thrones – the Old Town served as King’s Landing, with sites like Lovrijenac Fortress and the Jesuit Stairs featured in the series.
With your expert guide at the helm, you’ll learn about the rise and fall of the independent Republic of Ragusa, the city’s resilience through war, fire and earthquakes, and its modern-day cultural revival. You’ll walk along the famed Stradun, the 300 metre long main limestone-paved street that runs from Pile Gate to Luža Square; take in the 16th-century Gothic-Renaissance Sponza Palace and the Cathedral of the Assumption, a Baroque cathedral with a treasury containing relics, including St. Blaise’s arm, and Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin; take water from Onofrio’s Fountain, a 15th-century fountain near Pile Gate, built as part of the city’s historic water system; see the iconic Jesuit Stairs leading to the Church of St. Ignatius, famous as the “Walk of Shame” location in Game of Thrones; and learn about the Franciscan and Dominican Monasteries – the Franciscan Monastery includes a 14th-century pharmacy, one of Europe’s oldest operating pharmacies. For those that are willing, you can walk the walls, up to 6 metres thick in parts, for panoramic views of the Adriatic and the Old Town.
After a lunch of local specialties at a quietly tucked-away Old Town restaurant, the rest of the afternoon and evening is yours at leisure. You might choose to stay in the Old Town and further explore some of the amazing buildings you’ve walked past, and drop into any of the wonderful museums and galleries. Alternatively, you might take the cable car up Mount Srđ for panoramic views across the Adriatic and Elaphiti Islands, or join a Game of Thrones tour to some of the filming locations.
Overnight: Hotel Kompas, Dubrovnik (B, L)
This morning after breakfast, we’ll take the scenic journey south along the Adriatic coast, passing dramatic seascapes and traditional villages to the tiny country of Montenegro and the jewel in its crown – Kotor.
At Herceg Novi, a historic coastal town at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, we’ll ditch our coach and, weather permitting, board a speedboat for a memorable cruise on the breathtaking Bay of Kotor. We’ll travel first into the open Adriatic, cruising past Mamula Island, the small fortified islet that guards the entrance to the bay, and onward to the striking Blue Cave where the sunlight illuminates the water in vivid shades of blue. Back in the Bay, we’ll pass hidden submarine tunnels carved into the cliffs before speeding through the narrow Verige Strait, the gateway between the outer and inner bays to the little island home of the church of Our Lady of the Rocks, where we’ll pause to learn about the legend that prompted the church to be built in 1630, before continuing to the postcard-perfect baroque town of Perast.
Here, we’ll disembark for a waterside lunch of fresh local flavours with views of the bay before continuing by boat to the pedestrian-only UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of Kotor, tucked into the furthest reach of the fjord-like bay. Enjoy free time to explore its well-preserved medieval walls, cobbled lanes, Orthodox and Catholic churches, and museums, including the Maritime Museum and a quirky Cat Museum – there are hundreds of cats living freely in the old city, and locals consider them guardians of the city, historically kept to control rats on ships. You may wish to climb partway up the fortress path for sweeping views, browse the wonderful artisan stores, or simply enjoy a coffee in one of the elegant old squares.
After returning to Dubrovnik by coach, your evening is free to dine at leisure.
Overnight: Hotel Kompas, Dubrovnik (B, L)
The last full day of our tour is yours to enjoy any way you like before gathering in the evening for a celebratory farewell dinner including drinks.
You may wish to catch the local bus for a 10-minute ride directly to Dubrovnik Old Town and explore some more; or visit the Red History Museum in nearby Gruz – a modern and interactive space that offers a fascinating glimpse into life under socialism and Yugoslav rule, a striking counterpoint to the medieval heritage of the Old Town. For nature lovers, consider a short transfer to the Trsteno Arboretum, one of the oldest arboreta in the world, with Renaissance gardens, aqueducts, and panoramic coastal views. Alternatively, take a ferry to Lokrum Island, a peaceful nature reserve just offshore, ideal for a gentle walk or a swim; or be picked up from the hotel for any number of day tour options, including a Game of Thrones tour – the hotel and your Tour Leader can assist with this.
This evening, we’ll come together one last time for a special farewell dinner to celebrate our time together and reflect on the many cultures, stories, and landscapes encountered during your journey.
Overnight: Hotel Kompas, Dubrovnik (D)
Our tour concludes after breakfast this morning. Private airport transfers to Dubrovnik Airport will be arranged to align with your flight departure time. If you wish to stay on a little longer at the hotel, please contact our office to request your post-tour accommodation at our tour rate.
